A tough first day at the office

Premier Match Wrap

Woodridge Homes Premier's 17 vs Northern United Premier's 76

Saturday was a big learning curve, as yes, we were off the pace but the score didn't really reflect how well in patches we played. Playing Norths at Porirua Park, then the Hurricanes releasing Jackson Garden-Bachop it was going to be a very tough assignment.

Positive points of the game was how well our scrum and lineout operated. I think we won all our lineouts and put pressure on the Norths lineout and we also held our own in the scrum, but some bad defensive reads contributed to a lot of Norths points. We created enough opportunities and honestly should have picked up a 4 try bonus point but unfortunately only nabbed 3 tries to Joel Knight, Waisea Yabakivou and Imanueli Bese with Stephen Nelson converting 1 try. Another positive outcome was Ants Pettett playing 20 minutes which was his first stint of rugby for over a year which he come through fine.

No injuries from Saturday's game so we go into MSP with a full squad, plus the 5 players that were unavailable against Norths. Work-on’s this week is defence (pride in our line), line speed and attacking space out wide after we have earned the right up front. – Andrew Wharakura (Head Coach)

Premier Reserve Match Wrap

Quay Marine Premier Reserves 5 vs Northern United Premier Reserves 48

A match that saw our team committing too many errors and Norths turning the errors into points. These errors were made up of two components; lack of time in the trenches i.e. struggling combinations, and fitness. We constantly kept Norths set piece under pressure throughout the match, however, unfortunately, we failed to capitalise. For long periods of the game, the forward pack struggled to provide a strong platform for the team to execute an attack however when the team had the ball in hand, we broke the line on several occasions only for unique decision making, a drop pass or a less than favourable bounce of the ball to end play.

Team try scorer: Hyrum Vaai (Cripples). Should have been another unfortunately, we could only but laugh at what might have been. All players performed admirably.

Work on's: training numbers, developing combinations and set piece. – Brent Carroll (Head Coach)
