JRFC - Response to Covid-19 - UPDATED

Updated: Mar 21, 2020

An important update for members, sponsors and supporters of our club with the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to develop.

What does it mean for the club?

With the suspension of community rugby until 18 April, the club will be quieter over the next month. At the same time, the club is by no means closing its doors and is still keen to promote certain activity in and around the club in line with Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines and also from the advice received through NZ Rugby and also the Wellington Rugby Football Union.

New guidelines were received today regarding inside gatherings of greater than 100 people and that simply cannot be ignored.

UPDATED - 21 March 2020

Further guidance was received today regarding restaurant / bar guidelines. As such, we will be ensuring the following:

  • 1 metre distance between people at the clubrooms

  • Headcount not to exceed 100 people for indoor events

  • Register of all people present including full name, address, phone and email to be retained for one month.

For players

We have been advised that contact training is to stop until 13 April applying to all community rugby. In the meantime, the advice received is that strength and conditioning, fitness, ball skill drills and exercises are ok until we hear otherwise for those comfortable engaging.

With this, we urge the following:

· Use personal drink bottles or clearly marked separate cups / glasses. Don’t share with others

· Ensure rugby equipment is cleaned regularly including balls

· Regularly wash hands (in particular before and after training) for at least 20 seconds

· Reduce spitting

· Cough and sneeze into your elbow or tissue

· Stay at home if you are not feeling well (this is simple!).

We want to keep momentum going across our teams and will be supporting non-contact training with sensible hygiene protocols, however, safety is paramount in this situation. Registering for the 2020 season can continue and you can find a link here. Coach, referee and education activities can continue in accordance with MoH guidelines (ie. Now less than 40 people in size as outlined by NZ Rugby).

Events at the club

Recent developments have obviously had an impact on the various activities around the club and here is an update on certain activities:

· Newlands Softball Club – final weekend (including junior prize-giving) – unfortunately cancelled

· Sponsors Event / Season Launch for Senior Rugby scheduled for this Friday – postponed until 17 April

· Wally Smith Farewell – continuing within MoH guidelines (4 April), although to be monitored in light of changing restrictions

· Night At The Races – postponed until further notice (scheduled 11 April).

Other community groups such as the Olympic Harriers will still be planning to use the club in smaller group sizes in accordance with MoH guidelines. Roger Betham’s boxfit classes have been cancelled for at least two weeks.

Tough times can bring opportunity. We will still be aiming to run a working bee session on the weekend of 28/29 March, and we will be looking for some volunteers for this. There is plenty to do around the club from cleaning up spaces to painting with sufficient social distancing.

Please note: bookings of our facilities during this time can still take place assuming the gathering falls within the guidelines provided by the MoH and sensible hygiene protocols are followed.

Hygiene around the club

We will be ensuring the club remains in a very hygienic state over the coming weeks and we expect those that enter and use the club respect this also especially with the green room (otherwise this will be locked down).

We will be putting awareness posters up and also providing plenty of options to hand wash around the club including hand sanitising stations.

Please note: if you have travelled overseas in the past 14 days, we expect you to follow the MoH guidelines and for you to stay away from the club and self-isolate.

Covid-19 queries

If you have any questions around these developments or see any sort of untoward behaviour around the club that would not appear acceptable in light of these events, please do not hesitate to contact our enquiries email at which is attended daily.

Remember, this is a fast and moving target and we will continue to provide updates on our website at

Stay safe everyone and bring on a footy season in any way, shape or form!
