Old Timer's Day Awaits...

We are only days away from yet another historic Old Timer’s Day up at Helston Park. Some history now being over 120 years old, established in 1900.

The weather forecast for now is looking superb, about 15 degrees, mainly fine with high cloud and some light northerlies. The hospitality will be superb as normal with a great lunch, plenty of cold stuff on offer and some quality entertainment in the evening, if it isn’t the Lady Soul Band it could be some poetry with Robbie.

Another little incentive to get up to the club early is Ma’a Nonu, the All Black great of 103 test caps is presenting the jerseys to our Premiers around 12.45pm. Get along for this!

Our Premiers play for the Mick Kenny Memorial Cup on Saturday vs the Wellington Axemen, a club with even more history than our beloved.

Some might ask, who is Mick Kenny? Some quick facts:

· Full name: Edward Henry William Kenny

· Born: 29 March 1917 in Johnsonville

· Passed: 11 May 2001 at 84 years.

Mick was part of the 22nd Battalion involved in the 2nd World War. He played for Johnsonville prior to heading to war and was a talented fullback. He went to war and suffered the consequence of a machine gun to the chest which for many would see no more rugby being played. However, he returned and played for the Wellington club and also represented the NZ Maori All Blacks, still carrying shrapnel in his body. He was some individual and there is plenty of history behind what is at stake on Saturday.

The Mick Kenny Memorial Cup match kicks off at 2.45pm.

A reminder for Saturday’s run of play:

· 11.30am – Doors open

· 12.15pm – Lunch for members and sponsors

· 12.45pm – Welcome and Jersey presentation to 2020 Premier Team

· 1pm – Superloans Premier Reserves Cripples vs Petone Brotherhood (White)

· 2.45pm – Woodridge Homes Premiers vs Wellington Axemen Premiers

· 5.30pm – Premier match speeches including results of the day

· 6pm – Blazer and Life Member presentations

· 6.30pm – Membership draw

· 7.30pm – Entertainment by the Lady Soul Band.

This Week's Games

What Happened Last Week?

A heartbreaker at the 'Mata. Our Premier boys looking for their first Swindale Shield win in 31 matches ventured to Ngati Toa Domain.

With the inclusion of Hurricane Kane Le’aupepe, the boys were confident of finally grabbing a scalp and led early in the match. Kane then scored off a lovely chip from Mark Sutton just before oranges to go in 12-3 up at the break.

Turning against a steady northerly, the boys lost that decent lead early in the second half through a fortuitous cross field kick which ended up with a try. After a good battle was traded throughout the half Andy Ellis crossed around 10 mins from time to take the lead 20-16.

We then controlled the ball nicely into the last couple of minutes down their end, unfortunately to then lose possession and what resulted was an additional 10 mins of added time down on our line. In the end with the penalty count going berserk and a yellow card issued, our scrum couldn’t hold the pressure and they were awarded a penalty try around 90 mins into the game! Hard luck boys, a massive effort. Final score 23-20 to Pare-Plim.

In the early game, our Superloans Premier Reserve Cripples had a great win over the Para-Plim Reserves 40-18 in their first win of the season. Our Superloans Colts went down 36-25 to Norths White and the mighty Presidents lost in a close one 10-5 to Norths.
