The long weekend beckons and the Hawks take flight...

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Kia ora to our Hawks Community!

Welcome to another update from the club as we approach a much needed long weekend for many of us. The last couple of weeks for our Premier's have been season defining but also history defying! Firstly, our Woodridge Homes Premier's knocked off Marist St Pat's for the first time since 1998. The boys then took on Wainuiomata and beat them for the first time for at least 17 years. In winning that match, it was also the first time since 2005 we have won four Swindale Shield matches. Let's take a moment on those achievements.......a massive up's to the lads, the coaching and management staff but also those close such as whanau and our loyal supporters who turn up year in year out! The last time the lads knocked over OBU in the top flight was in 2005.....just saying.

It doesn't get any easier this weekend with a trip down the road to Nairnville Park to take on Old Boys University. There are close links at both clubs with a few of our 2022 lads including coaches having spent some time at that club in past and recent years. Hopefully, that is the leg up we need. Conditions look to be tricky given the wet weather we have seen this week although it is meant to improve for the weekend. Current position on the Swindale Shield table: 10th of 14 (with a game to catch up / decide on).

You might be asking, what about the Hutt Old Boys Marist match and where are our three points? Why did Tawa / Para-Plim get 3 for theirs? We will know the fate of this in more detail shortly with alignment across the board....perhaps not the best management around these rules this year!

In terms of our other grades, our Premier Reserves have had it a bit tough and are yet to get off a duck. They take on a hapless Wellington Axemen side tonight (yes @ Alex Moore Park) as we have agreed to do them a favour and play tomorrow. On ya lads and good luck for it! Table position: 6th of 7 (with a game to catch up / decide on).

Our Colts have been feeling their way into the competition also with some tough matches. More recently finding Tawa too challenging going down 5-38. The competition takes a week off this week and then the boys have a bye next week so should be coming back fresh for the Para-Plim match on the 18th of June. Table position: 11th of 11.

The Megabyte Tech Consultant U85's Terrahawks are ticking along just fine. Unbeaten thus far into a tightly contested competition that appears to be featuring the usual foes of Avalon, Eastbourne and Upper Hutt up the top. Stokes Valley and OBU are in the mix this time around also! Table position: 3rd of 12 (with a game to catch up / decide on).

The Mighty Cripples have some real experience about their group this time in and are back in their usual place of reserve grade. The boys are tracking nicely but came up against an ultra strong Oriental-Rongotai reserve side on Saturday going down narrowly 12-22 in their competition opener. Table position: too early one round in.

The Pressie's resilient as ever are ticking along nicely. Some close 5-10 results so far this season not quite falling for them but a good group together once again including a bit of depth with numbers. Table position: yeah-nah, doesn't matter.

This Week's Games

With the long weekend we see a very quiet round of rugby with only our Woodridge Homes Premier's and Premier Reserves taking the field tonight and tomorrow.

Venue, time

Old Boys University

Nairnville Park, 2.45pm

Premier Reserve's

Wellington Axemen

Alex Moore Artificial, 7.30pm (tonight)

Get along to support the boys both tonight and tomorrow! Waiora (Alex Moore Sports Hub) is open from 5-9pm tonight if you want to check it out for a pre-match beverage. It's not a long way to Nairnville so get on your way tomorrow also.....

There is also an Under 16 exhibition match between the Johnsonville Hawks and Wellington Axemen originals kicking off tonight at 6pm under the new lights at Hataitai. If you are in town before heading homeward, I am sure it will be a great spectacle.

What is coming up at the club?

We have had a pretty good run over the past few weeks with home matches for our Premier's and that now changes with three away matches in a row before Old Timer's Day later this month. A quick shout out also regarding the $200 must go membership draw which went to Cleveland from the U85's on Saturday! Well done.

Games Night - this Saturday!

Old Timer's Day - Saturday 25 June

The run of play for the day will be finalised in due course and shared with you all. We cannot wait for that one!

JRFC online store launching!

In conjunction with Probands our kit provider, we have launched a web store for merchandise. Currently we have singlets and gym shorts available (limited time on these) and we will be hoping to build on the apparel on offer in the coming weeks. Check it out at the following link!

Long weekend safety call out!

As we are approaching the long weekend many of us have plans to head away. Play it safe out there on the roads. If you are having a couple of beverages for the Queen plan ahead and don't get behind the wheel unless you are the sober one 👍. Tiaki kahu whanau!
