The Swindale Begins!

Welcome members and supporters for our 2nd newsletter for 2019. Once again, we are looking forward to another season of rugby and we look forward to seeing many of you around the traps and at the club in the coming weeks.

Swindale Shield & Harper Lock Shield 2019 Starts This Week

Another year has flown by and the time has come for the season to kick off. Saturday sees our Woodridge Homes Premier and Quay Marine Premier Reserves sides travel away to Jerry Collins Stadium to take on the might of Norths. This won’t be an easy task to take on the 2018 Swindale Shield Champions, however, it probably isn’t a bad time to get them! Recruitment has been light for our side in the off season although it has been about instilling local values and respect back in the blue jersey, as well, a good buzz. Appointing Andrew Wharakura as Head Coach of the Premier’s has been a key part to this. The culture amongst the wider squad in pre-season has been second to none which should bode well for the upcoming season and a stepping stone into 2020 and beyond. Andrew’s message for the first game is ‘Don’t be Afraid’ and that should apply not only to our players but to supporters to get along for the season opener.

A massive shout out needs to go to two returning locals, Eamonn Carr, an incredible recovery from Stage 4 Lymphoma late last year and Anthony Pettett back from MSP. Hope to see these guys feature on the bench.

· Woodridge Homes Premiers vs Norths, Jerry Collins Stadium, 2.45pm

· Quay Marine Premier Reserves vs Norths, Jerry Collins Stadium, 1pm

Just to keep your diary up to date, the boys travel to Evans Bay Park to take on MSP next week and our first home game is a week later on April 6 vs Paremata-Plimmerton!

Mental Health Awareness Session – Monday 1 April, JRFC Clubrooms, 6.30pm

Have you asked your mate, ‘you all good?’ recently? If not, you should.

In conjunction with NZ Rugby we are hosting a Mental Health Awareness Session at the club on 1 April. This will be a workshop type session and we are urging all our young players and members to get along. We can take 25-50 people in this session so please be quick to show some interest.

We have Nehe Milner-Skudder along for the session to assist in facilitating and to provide some key insights around how mental health is impacting so many rugby players and people in general day to day.

For more information, please contact us at Young fellas and young ladies will get priority!

To access this offer, when you are in store ask for your purchase to be put on the Johnsonville Rugby Club cash account, the team member will then ask for your first and last name and payment method, “that’s it”!

We will report back to your club each month on the amount of purchases made, and the amount of money going back to your club.

This is our way of being local, supporting local clubs and rewarding the members for your loyalty to the club and to your locally owned business.

Go the mighty Blues and I look forward to seeing you all at the club and in store.

Brendan and the Mitre10 Crofton Team.

Alcohol Policy at the Johnsonville Rugby Football Club

The JRFC Committee have launched a new policy to assist our rugby club meet the needs of our on-premise license. This might sound like the ‘fun police’ putting a stop to a whole lot of fun at the club but this isn’t the case. We want to ensure our members and supporters have a safe place to enjoy themselves.

You can access the policy here, however, the key aspects of this include the following:

Alcohol is not to be consumed outside of our licensed area. What does this mean?

For any alcohol purchased at the club, this needs to be consumed within the upstairs floor of the clubrooms, only i.e, not outside or not downstairs in the green room. This applies not only before, during and after matches and for team building sessions.

As a responsible host it is critical we ensure we are not only meeting our license requirements but also ensuring a safe environment at the club. It is apparent several clubs have had some issues with their license in recent times not only rugby related, and we need to tidy up our act in all regards.

Please note this will take effect from April 6 which is our first home game.

For more information or any concerns, please feel free to contact the club at or contact someone on our Committee.

We Thank Our Sponsors

Without our sponsors the club simply does not run so we are very grateful for them. Recently we have had several of our major sponsors recommit to the club for 2019 which is terrific news. These are Woodridge Homes, Superloans, Quay Marine, Tracer Construction, Mitre 10 Crofton Downs and New World Newlands!

We are still working through finalising our 2019 sponsorship's and if you are interested in becoming a sponsor or want to discuss an existing sponsorship in more detail, please contact
